Horseheads High School Counseling Services
Horseheads High School counselors meet with students several times annually to discuss their interests, abilities and post-secondary plans. The counselors' goal is to help students set and meet appropriate short and long term goals for their future. To do this, counselors use a variety of information including standardized test results; academic performance; interest, ability, and values inventories; and extra-curricular activities.
Students meet with counselors in both individual and group formats. Group sessions generally cover educational and career planning information and are held during the sophomore and junior year.
Students are also encouraged to use career resource materials. Bridges, a web-based career information/assessment and post-secondary planning program, is available to students through any Internet portal or location. In addition, the Counseling Office houses an extensive career resource library, a collection of college catalogs and guides, financial aid information, applications, and standardized test registration and preparation materials. All materials can be used in the office or signed out for a student to take home.
Counselors are trained and available to talk with students about personal, educational and social issues. Students are encouraged to schedule a meeting with their counselor if they need a person to talk with. A counselor can also help make a referral to an outside agency for more intensive counseling services if the student and parent wish to do so.
In order to communicate with parents, counselors send a variety of individual and group mailings each year. Parents can also learn a great deal of information through the school newsletter. Informational sessions are also conducted several times throughout the year, including an 8th Grade Parent Orientation, Financial Aid Nights,a College Information Night, and a presentation on career and college exploration using Bridges.
High School counselors also work closely with the regional counselors' association in planning and implementing the College information Day each October at the Arnot Mall.
