Information for New Students and Parents
Welcome to Horseheads High School! Below is information regarding the details of our procedures. If you have further questions, please call the school at 795-2500. Thank you!
Schedules: Students will receive their schedules in homeroom on the first day of school and on the first day of second semester.
ID Cards: All students are issued ID cards when they enter 9th grade. Students must carry their ID card with them at all times. The card is used all four years of school for ID purposes and for the library, lunches, dances, and yearbooks. Replacement cards are $2.00 and are available in the Attendance Office.
Code of Conduct: The district's Code of Conduct is in the student handbook and the district calendar. Parents are asked to review this code with their student.
Lockers: Students will be issued a locker the first day of school for books and other items, but please note that valuables should not be left in lockers. If a locker is not working properly, the student should report it to the homeroom teacher or the attendance office.
Phone Numbers and Extensions: Phone numbers for High School offices are in the student handbook and district calendar.
Voicemail: Parents may call and leave a voice mail message for a teacher if they have a question or need to set up a conference. Voicemail extensions are listed on the school's web page in the "Staff Directory" section. Calls are not put through to classrooms.
Parents' Night and Report Card Dates: The dates for Parents' Nights and Report Cards are in the student handbook under the school calendar page, and in the district calendar. Report cards are given to students in homeroom during the year and the last report card of the year will be mailed home.
Weekly Report Card: Parents can receive a weekly report card. To do so, the student must go to the Guidance office and request a yellow card. The student then takes the card to his/her teachers. It is the students' responsibility to deliver the card to the parent at the end of the week.
Entrances: For security reasons, all outside doors are locked during the school day. Visitors will be "buzzed in" and will report and sign in at the Main Office.
The following doors have access:
North Wing door located at the Auditorium on Fletcher Street.
South Wing door located at District Administration, off Center Street.
Drop-Off Point: In the morning, students must be picked up or dropped off by the flag pole behind the school.
Absences: When a student is absent, an excuse must be brought to the attendance office when they return. Educational absences such as field trips or sporting events do not require an excuse.
Legal Absences or Tardies: A legal absence or tardy is for sickness, health appointments, court appearances, religious reasons, or family emergencies. Any other reason is considered illegal. All absences, whether legal or illegal, count toward the attendance policy.
Late to School: If a student is late to school, he/she must report to the attendance office to sign in, with a written excuse from a parent.
Automated Phone System: Each evening, our automated phone system calls those parents whose students have missed a class or homeroom. We also use the automated system to announce important information and events.
Green Cards: When a student has an appointment, he/she must bring a note to the attendance office in the morning and a green card will be issued to leave school. Parents are asked to make prior arrangements with the student as to where he/she will be picked up. Parents do not have to come into the school to sign them out. Upon return, the student must sign in at the attendance office and will be given a pass to their class. Students should bring the green card back to school upon their return.
Closed Campus: The High School has a closed campus. Students are not allowed to leave for lunch, and food from outside vendors is not permitted.
Electronic Devices: Such devices, including but not limited to cell phones, ipods, mp3 players, and walkmans, are not permitted to be used or visible during the school day. Teachers have been instructed to take the device and turn it in to the Main Office as soon as possible. Parents will need to pick up the device. Repeated violations of this procedure may result in a conduct referral and consequence.
Free/Reduced Lunch: Forms may be picked up in the main office, cafeteria or on the district website.
Detention: Detention is held on Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:15 to 4:00 p.m..
S.O.S.: School on Saturday is held from 8:15 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturdays.
O.S.S.: Parents of students assigned Out of School Suspension for discipline will be contacted by an administrator for details.
