The Horseheads High School Science Department offers instruction in Earth Science, Living Environment, Chemistry, and Physics, all of which are Regents courses.
In addition to the core Regents science courses, the high school science department offers non-Regents courses in General Science, General Biology, General Chemistry and General Physics. These courses follow the same curriculum as their Regents counterparts, but are slightly less intense in content.
Horseheads High School offers a number of elective science courses in a wide variety of disciplines, including Astronomy/Historical Geology, North American Wildlife, Anatomy and Physiology, Marine Biology, and Zoology. These classes were developed by the High School teachers and are offered to students who are looking to further their knowledge in specific scientific areas.
In the upper grade levels, students have the opportunity to continue their scientific interests and receive college credit courses through Corning Community College. Horseheads High School offers college-level science classes in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
The science department has been integrating technology into the curriculum. The department has acquired, through grants and other funding, over $40,000 worth of Vernier lab equipment which include a number of sensors, probes, flow meters, and other scientific data collection tools. The science department has also recently received the GeoWall, a three-dimensional projection system. We also have our own Earthwalk system, a portable wireless laptop case that contains 15 laptop computers. New to the department for the 2007-2008 school year is the Promethean panel, which is currently located in two of our science rooms.
The Science Department is committed to the continual development of scientific studies and interest. We have a Science Club for students, which includes two competitive groups, the Science Olympiad Team and the Chem Bowl Team. Students on these teams extend their knowledge and compete against other schools.
