Horseheads Middle School
Mathematics
The Horseheads Middle School Mathematics Program instructs students according to the New York State Mathematics Standards. Teachers work collaboratively to develop lessons and assessments and to prepare for the NYS Math Assessments that take place each March in grades 7 and 8. Students are expected to keep a notebook to be used to study for the comprehensive final exam in June.
Middle School math topics include number sense and operations, algebra, statistics and probability, measurement, and geometry. In addition to grade level math, Accelerated Math and Math Preparation are offered for both grades 7 and 8. Grade 8 Accelerated Math students take the Regents exam at the end of the year and receive high school credit for successful completion of the course. Math Preparation is taught in conjunction with classroom teachers on areas of math weakness. Students work on fundamental math skills and receive extra support for grade level topics.
