Horseheads Middle School
Social Studies
The goal of the Social Studies Program at Horseheads Middle School is to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of United States History as well as provide them with the skills to be active and productive citizens. We also emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving strategies.
The curriculum is a two-year course in American History. The seventh-grade curriculum spans the time period from the early Native American civilizations through the Civil War. The eighth-grade curriculum begins with Reconstruction following the Civil War and will conclude with current United States History.
We use a variety of common assessment methods to evaluate students, including vocabulary quizzes, document-based questions, performance assessments and common final examinations. We also emphasize the use of technology through online web quests, creative Power Point projects and interactive scavenger hunts.
